“Now II” is the retrospective of former students by Alf Lechner and an homage to his time as a visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Artist Munich 30 years ago. This group exhibition with artists Hilde Heigl, Inga Jónsdóttir, Dieter Kunz, Chris Kuttler, Jörg Steiner and Wolfgang Weileder follows 1992 from Alf Lechner curated exhibition “Now” at Lothringerstraße 13 in Munich.

With the exhibition “Now II”, the Alf Lechner Foundation presents these six artists with works from the past 30 years as well as new works created specifically for the exhibition, thus showing an arc in the development of these artists in their form and expression. It is the first time since 1992 that these six artists are exhibiting together again, and it is the first exhibition in which they consciously and directly reference the work of Alf Lechner.

In this type of overview, visitors get an insight into the individual development of their practice and biographies. We see changes in the materials they use for their artistic expression, new forms of expression, processes, and surprising similarities between Iceland, Great Britain and Germany.
Be it the Icelander Inga Jónsdóttir, who now curates art herself, Hilde Heigl, who is associated with the theatre, who later studied metal construction, Dieter Kunz, who moved to Iceland and England and a multimedia interface with urban space and architecture, or Wolfgang Weileder, who is also active in Great Britain and exhibits and teaches internationally as an artist. Or Chris Kuttler, who went in the direction of art education right from the start, or Jörg Steiner, who in photography approaches the monumental work of Lechner.

The exhibition explores the relationship between time and space, the interface between permanence and transience. The open dialogue between these six artists creates a democratic field of tension in a location-based context, which, as a physical combination of six different artist biographies in six different media (sculpture, spatial installation, painting, photography, film and digital art), overcomes categorical limits towards a new space of experience. The art of these six former students by Alf Lechner chooses from the everyday known, highlights familiar materials, objects or pictorial situations This highlights, intervenes, reduces, selects, places them in new contexts and refers to the work of Alf Lechner and the working principles he imparted, such as the significance of the work of art in relation to the surrounding architecture; the need to rearrange form as a result of a physical intervention or the exploration of light as a form-creating and independent element.
